Clearly things are different. There is no going back and going forward feels like a foggy slog. From burnt out to fed up to don’t care, everyone agrees on one thing: It’s time to take action. It’s time to take a stand. It’s time to push back against the authoritarians and oligarchs and preserve our country and our rights to govern ourselves. The government works for the people, not the other way around.
So make the penny our symbol. Not the fight to keep the penny being minted. That’s a petty fight over what he thinks he can and cannot do. I mean the penny that’s already in existence. The one that’s in your drawer or under the cushion. The one he can’t touch. But you can, and you can use it as a symbol to show you will not abide.
The penny is simple in its symbolism. It stands for the common person. It is everywhere and with everyone. The ubiquity is its power. Like a democracy.
Even the poorest have a penny and the richest man couldn’t care a less. To the billionaire, the penny barely exists, an infinitesimal amount barely noticeable on a spread sheet. “Why not wipe out the penny and round to the nearest five?” he suggests.
Because the penny matters now. Even if its economic power has reduced it to a loss on the federal books, that doesn’t mean it’s a loss to us. It’s a symbolic power. And it’s ours.
There is Lincoln; a visage of true courage in the face of tyranny.
There is Liberty; the heart of our cause to remain free.
There is E Pluribus Unum; Out of many, One.
“A penny for your thoughts” “Putting your two cents worth in” “The penny will drop” It is way of expressing your dissatisfaction while also expressing your commitment to the country and its heritage.
Pennies from Heaven, it is what we could use right now.
